The Hands On Learning program at Sale College aims to assist some students, from Years 7 to 10, with an alternative approach to help them engage with the school experience. It has been found that taking these students out of the classroom one day a week, connecting them to mentors and alternative peer groups in their own school, and then giving them practical and creative real activities, acts as a circuit breaker, alleviating the frustrations they have developed with mainstream schooling.
A place to Belong: A physical sanctuary at school.
People to belong to: Small teams working together, sharing meals and building strong relationships.
Real things to do: Engaging in creative and meaningful projects.
Giving back: Making valuable contributions to their community, building self-esteem and connection.
HOL takes ten students out of class one day a week fostering teamwork and leadership. Students and artisan-teachers share breakfast and lunch and work together to create valuable structures for the school and local community.
Most students build self-esteem, friendships, and a sense of belonging and become more content at school. Motivation, focus and the ability to set goals increase when they return to class – building the platform for improvements in literacy and numeracy.
